Business License FAQs

I am doing an online business out of my home, do I need a license?

Yes! Every person operating a business within city limits is required to obtain a business license.

Why do I need a sales tax number?

Any time you are a business that is selling goods or products you are required to charge sales tax, and the sales tax needs to be reported to Spanish Fork City

How long is my business license valid for?

Business licenses run from January 1st to December 31st and are not prorated from when the license is issued or renewed.

I moved my business location, can I update my previous license with the new address?

No. Business licenses are name, address, and owner specific. So if your business name, address or a change of ownership occurs you will need to apply for a new business license with the new information.

I have a commercial restaurant location and would like to do a food truck. Do I need a separate business license for this?

Yes. Every business location requires its own business license. If you have multiple food trucks, each truck will require an individual license. 

I am doing door to door sales, do I need a license?

Yes. General Solicitors are required to hold a city license with each sales person holding their own individual license.

I want to do a Home Occupation selling firearms. Is this allowed?

Yes. Spanish Fork does allow for home occupations to sell firearms with the proper clearance from the ATF prior to the issuance of a city license.

I'm hosting a one-day event from a local venue, do I need a license??

  • If the event is being held privately for customers or employees,  then a business license is not required. You will need to work directly with the venue.
  • If the event is inviting the public, then a business license will be required.
  • If the event is being held from city owned property, a special events permit is required in conjunction with a business license. 

Can I operate a dog kennel from my residential home?

No. Spanish Fork City code prohibits the commercial kenneling of animals in any residential zone. All kenneling businesses must be located within an industrial zone.

I want to sell my homemade items on the corner, do I need a license?

  • Yes. All vendors selling goods and products must obtain a business license.
  • Spanish Fork City does not allow for the sale of goods and products from any public right of way (sidewalks, corners, parkstrips etc)
  • All vendors wishing to sell their goods must obtain written consent from the property owner prior to issuance of the license. 

I want my business to be part of a city-sanctioned event, how do I sign up?

Participation in city-hosted events requires a Special Events Permit and a valid city business license. You will need to contact our Special Events department by calling 801-804-4607 or by emailing events@spanishfork.org.

Can I operate my business adjacent to a city-hosted event without a special events permit?

No. No licenses will be valid within 2,000 feet of the perimeter of the parcel of a city-sanctioned event. This includes food trucks, concession carts, and table sales. 

I have a license from another local city for my food truck, do I need a license for Spanish Fork as well?

No. The State of Utah only requires a mobile food vendor to obtain one city license that is to be honored throughout the state in different municipalities.

I am renting a booth in a salon, do I need my own license?

If you are operating as a separate entity and not as an employee to the salon, then you are required to obtain an individual license. Spanish Fork City now offers a Booth Rental License within our Commercial business license category. 

Do I need a license/ permit for a yard sale?

No, Spanish Fork City does not require a license for residential yard sales. Residents are allowed to operate up to three (3) separate yard/garage sale events of 48 hours or less within a 12 month period from the same residence or street address. It shall only be conducted by the resident of the home selling personal items. No items to be placed in a public right of way or over a public sidewalk.
