Sign Maintenance

In order to assess compliance with MUTCD visibility and retro-reflectivity requirements, inspection will be carried out every year according to the "Visual Inspection Method-Consistent Parameters Procedure" as explained in the Sign Retro-reflectivity Guidebook.

Procedure: Spanish Fork City has created sign inspection books that show different sections of town. These books are used by our inspector to assess the visibility, retro-reflectivity, and overall condition of the signs. All signs needing replacement will be noted in the sign inspection books. Missing signs will also be noted in order to maintain sign inventory to date. These books are then used to update our mapping system.

Using the previously completed sign inventory, the city will be divided into sections and sign inspection books will be created. The Inspectors, using the sign inspection books, will assess the visibility, retro-reflectivity, and overall condition of the signs. All signs needing replacement will be noted in the sign inspection books. Missing signs will also be noted in order to maintain sign inventory to date.

Consistent Parameter Procedure Requirements:

  • Inspection of signs must be conducted at night
  • Inspectors must be 60 years old or older
  • Inspectors must conduct inspections from a sports utility vehicle or pick up truck, model year 2000 or later
  • Inspectors must go through a training course
  • Inspection must be conducted at normal roadway speeds, and from the travel lane of the sign.

The city will budget to replace signs as soon as possible, as funds permit. After signs have been replaced, the replacement date will be noted in the inspection books. The GIS mapping will be updated with each inspection.

All requests from citizens, engineering department, and police will be evaluated at the time of the request.

If you have a request for sign replacement or repair in your area, go to the Citizen Support Center.
