A Letter From Mayor Mendenhall
Dear Spanish Fork Residents,
The City Council and I have been getting a number of questions regarding the public hearing on August 2 for a proposed property tax increase. The most common question we are getting is, “What is the purpose behind the property tax increase?” I want to provide an answer to this question.
The short answer is, for an indoor/outdoor aquatic & recreation center and senior center.
In March, I announced that we gave the green light to staff to start planning, locating, designing, and building this facility (watch the video announcement). At that time there were a lot of unknowns.
There still are a few unknowns, but after working with a focus group of residents to determine what amenities will be in the facility, we have a pretty good idea about what it will cost to build. Much of the funding will come from sales tax, with other sources being RAP tax monies, impact fees, and some property tax.
The public hearing on August 2 at 6 p.m. is to talk about the property tax portion. Our proposal is to increase taxes by $4.90 per month on the average home to partially fund the construction of this new facility.
We’ve talked about the increase in recent City Council meetings. One of the best summaries of the increase can be found in the June 21 meeting recording around the 2:40:00 mark.
We would love to hear your thoughts on the increase. You’re invited to our Truth-in-Taxation hearing at 6 p.m. on August 2, 2022, in the City Council Chambers (40 S Main St).
Sincerely,
Mayor Mike Mendenhall
